carrie bradshaw lied homewhole30 breakfast ideas

In  last Friday’s post, I asked you guys if you were interested in Whole30 updates this year and was really surprised that so many of you said yes, SO here we are! Last year I covered Whole30 by a weekly breakdown (you can see all of those in the “food” category of this site), and this year I’m going to be replacing Friday’s Five with Whole30 updates for the duration of this month. Let’s get into it –

PROS:

I have a lot more energy – major perk!

I feel like a balloon that has been popped. I am always shocked at how many grains I eat on a daily basis when I take them away. Yowza!

I love having three healthy meals a day and no snacks. I’m not a snacker and this has just reminded me how much better I feel when I stick to meal times.

CONS:

I miss wine. No surprise there, you guys know I’m a major wine-o!  When I have a really bad craving for it (like on Friday or Saturday night), I pour myself a small glass of organic concord grape juice. I know that technically you’re not supposed to drink juices… but I don’t have any guilt about this in times of desperation.  OR I’ll pour sparkling water in a wine glass with a lime wedge. 20 minutes later, my craving has disappeared.

I find myself dreading social situations that might involve food/beverages. This is my #1 dislike of any cleanse or eating program… I don’t need any more reasons to stay home. I’m already such a homebody!

FAVORITE RECIPES…

BREAKFAST:

I made these these egg cups (I skipped the sausage and just made them veggie), and the best part about it was not having to think about breakfast. Definitely plan on pre-cooking recipes for weekday mornings. So easy.

I tried the Whole30 method of cooking bacon in the oven (375 on an aluminum lined baking sheet for 15 minutes) and found it SO much easier than the skillet. Small victories!

I made this frittata (pictured above) and it was really good and a nice change after eating the same thing for breakfast for a week.

I’ve started making bulletproof coffee. So far I really love it because I feel like it gives me more energy. I’m going to try to stick with it!

LUNCH:

I made my own mayo for chicken salad. I prefer chicken salad with greek yogurt over mayo, but for the time being this will have to work! I also add walnuts or almonds to this recipe.  I put a couple spoonfuls on a bed of lettuce or wrap them up in lettuce wraps.

I like to buy this salsa from Trader Joes and add green onions and red onions to it to make it chunkier. Basically I’m trying to recreate my favorite salsa from our local Mexican restaurant and it works pretty well! I’ll eat it with plantain chips (or add it to a veggie egg scramble), and I’ll have some grilled chicken or protein on the side for lunch.  One might say I am addicted to this salsa.

This is the best egg salad recipe (I also shared it last year here), and I like to have it cold with leftover roasted finglerling potatoes.

DINNER:

I made this spaghetti squash and meat sauce and ate it off and on for nights when Christian worked late. I also tried it on zucchini noodles and it was delish.

This is always a weeknight go to recipe for me – fried “rice” without the grains and with waaayyy less calories (ditch the soy sauce if you’re on Whole30).

I made this shrimp recipe and put it on top of cauliflower rice. Really good.

That’s about it for now! I’ll share another update next Friday.

Let me know if you have questions or recommendations! My girlfriend Marissa of Style Cusp has done Whole30 multiple times and does a great job of sharing it on her site too. You can view her most recent post about it here. Thanks so much for reading and have a great weekend – XO –

  1. Yay@ whole 30! I remember last time you did it… So, this is my life daily! I am gluten intolerant and had struggled with my weight for years, so I eat a basically whole 30/Paleo based diet. Between that and yoga most days I’m so energetic and never get sick! The spaghetti squash spaghetti is one of my favs when I need a comfort meal.
Of course my sushi Valentine’s day will not be on my diet, but hey… Ya gotta have some fun in life!
    Have a great weekend!

    1. Exactly! That’s my goal – to ditch grains/dairy long-term (as much as I can). You are #goals, Angela!

  2. Your Whole30 posts are coming just in time for me. I plan on doing this beginning March 6th. Why March 6th and not the 1st? Because I’m spending two weeks in Mexico and I wanna eat all the Mexican I can while I can!
Anyhoo, I actually made the chicken cacciatore on page 334 for the Mister. I ordered a chicken quesadilla for myself because I don’t like tomatoes…and well, the cacciatore is chock-full of tomatoes.
So thank you so much for these post. I think I may post my journey as well!

  3. I love bulletproof coffee! I feel waaaay more energized! I bought the oil and the right butter but have just been using my regular coffee. Do you have the special coffee? Do you think it really makes a difference?

  4. Can you post those super cute Prada coffee mugs?? I’m really waning to start whole30. I was a little weary but those recipes look delicious! Wine would be a big craving for me too! Keep up the updates and fave recipes! I love hearing the pros and cons.

  5. Thanks for sharing! I’m definitely going to try that fried rice recipe! I completed Whole30 in January, but I loved the way I felt so much that I’m sticking to it! Especially during the week. On the weekend I allow myself to have a little wine… because we all need that in our lives every now and then! XO –

  6. Instead of ditching the soy sauce, try coconut aminos instead! They’re equally delicious and it really adds to a “fried rice” option!

  7. Kathleen –
I am right there with you! I started my first Whole30 February 1st and I feel great! Honestly I thought it was going to be harder than it actually is. I feel guilty saying that because I know a lot of people struggle at first. Thank you for these recipes! I was running out of ideas. Good luck with the rest of the month. That glass of wine on Day 31 will make it all worth while 🙂

  8. Hi Kathleen! I wanted to ask if next week, you could possibly share your mayo recipe? One of my staples is tuna salad with jalapeños and I’m always looking for new mayo recipes to mix it with. I’ve learned that not all homemade mayos are equal lol. I love the whole30 posts as I’m starting when I get back from a Vegas trip with my Mom next weekend. I’ve done it three times in the past and so I’m going to try to do it for 60 days this time.

  9. Hey Kathleen!

Hello from a long time follower, first time commenter!

My husband and I also live in Old Town Orange, and we’re on Day 10 of our first round of Whole 30. Just curious if you have found any local (or OC!) restaurants that you’ve found some yummy compliant meals at. I am missing Friday/Saturday dinner dates hard.core.

    1. Thank you for taking the time to comment Meaghan! Don’t you just love our little town!? I think the easiest thing while you’re on Whole30 is try to avoid restaurants altogether when you can. I’ve only eaten out once in the 11 days and I had a burger wrapped in lettuce and fries (which probably isn’t 100% compliant, but I’m letting it slide). Sorry I’m not more help!

      1. Boooo! That’s as far as I’ve gotten, too. And lettuce buns…thumbs down. I’ll just have to wait a month 😉

I absolutely love OTO. I’m from NY, and my husband is an Aussie. We’ve lived all over the place and after NYC and Melbourne, Orange is my next fave! Your snaps around town always make me smile.

          1. What?! No, sadly wasn’t me, but now I am intrigued if there is another New Yorker hanging out with her Aussie husband in OTO! I assume you were at Aussie Bean? Maybe our paths will cross 🙂

          2. Haha YES, except I’m wrong – she’s a SOUTHERNER married to an Aussie and they run and manage The Aussie Bean coffee shop! You have to check it out if you haven’t already!!

          3. Haha yes, his name is Gavin (who runs the shop). I can’t remember his wife’s name, but my husband has become fast friends with everyone there. His little slice of home here in the OC. Fantastic coffee!

  10. I just finished Whole 30 last week! It was hard to eat out but I did find some places that did work. Tessamae sauces were a life saver! Here is my favorite recipe. If you go on their website they have lots good ideas too. Let me know if you try it! It was my boyfriend’s favorite thing I made.

  11. I tried a spaghetti squash chow mein off pinterest. If I remember correctly, it should be whole 30 compliant! It calls for sugar that I left out, otherwise its compliant. It was SO SO good! I love Chinese so it was nice to work into the every day and be veggie full!
