wearing a dress as a top

Earlier this year I got really stuck on this whole dress-as-a-top situation. I was raiding my closet for ways I could put different looks together. I came up with this one that is similar and summery and this one that is a little more appropriate for the office.

This button down dress is perfect dress-as-a-top material.  It has buttons halfway down and then opens into a flowy, drapey dream!  If you have any button front dresses, you can totally recreate this look at home on your own by only buttoning it halfway down.

And I’ll go ahead and address that no… my hair didn’t grow overnight! My length is currently in between long bob and long, so I clipped in some hair extensions (full post here) that added about three inches. I have to say, it was weird to see myself with long hair again. Even though I’ve had long hair for most of my life!  I actually think I might prefer it shorter… what do you guys think?

What do you think about styling dresses as tops? I think it really increases versatility in your closet, which is always a great thing in my opinion.

Thanks so much for reading! XO –

  1. Oh this is precious! I love it. I like your hair short and long. I think the shorter hair is just the right amount of sass for your personality, but long hair in the fall is easy and beautiful!

  2. Great post! I think the way you styled this look is gorgeous. It’s that boho meets feminine style. I also think your hair looks great short or long. I’ve never had short hair, always waist length, but I would love to hear your perspective on long versus short hair!

    1. I’ve LOVED having short hair… and I never thought I would say that! It’s easier, faster to wash/dry/style and I think something about it is mature and chic. And I never thought I’d say that!

  3. i love that dress, but i would look ridiculous if i tried to pull that look off. you, however, look amazing.

  4. What chain length did you pick for your 3 necklace?

Also, did you choose to do your birthstone or Christians?

  5. What length chain did you choose for the 3 necklace? Also, who’s birthstone color did you choose to do?

  6. Whenever I See someone wearing a dress as a top online I always think about you Kat! 🙂 you rock this style so well! I think I am just not bold enough, but I do think it looks amazing, so maybe I should just go for it??
Anyway, I actually do prefer your hair shorter (not to be rude, you are a beautiful woman with longer or short hair, we all know that! But you asked for opinions, and I think shorter hair suits your personality so much better! 🙂
