Ever since I saw these sun-bleached turtle shells on Jayson Home, I knew I wanted something similar without paying hundreds for it. I found these two beauties while thrifting and knew it was meant to be at $30. I used leftover Benjamin Moore Cloud White paint from when we painted our new place, and quickly brushed a coat on the outer shell.
After the paint dried, I sanded away parts here and there and voila! I had my own set of distressed shells. #turtletime
Fun fact: Christian is completely grossed out with turtles. I’ve been with the guy for seven years, but this was something I did not know. SO, my plan to hang these babies by the front door was a bust when he was fake gagging while looking at them (similar to Vicki Gunvalson on RHOC being carsick on the bus in Bali…who else saw that and laughed like crazy!?). I was forced to find a new hanging spot – one that he wasn’t necessarily forced to look at all the time, so I thought this little nook above our den blankets would be just right.
What do you think? Are y’all into it or not so much?
Thanks so much for reading! XO –
I LOVE this! What a fun, beachy accent!
I don’t mind the look, but as an animal person it’s kind of distressing (no pun intended).
I hear you – my husband felt the same way. I didn’t really think of it that way until after I bought them secondhand – that’s why I had to hang them out of his line of vision.
I love the idea of doing this, gold would be pretty too! I stayed at The Tides in Miami and they have an entire wall of turtle shells, so pretty!

Love the idea of gold! I’ve seen some similar type layouts on Pinterest and they’re so cool!
They look so cute hanging above the blankets! Also, I want that ladder!
My mom actually made this ladder using old, repurposed spindles – isn’t that crazy? I’ve used it everywhere I’ve lived since college!
I think I’m with your husband on this one. Cute ladder though!
